Mahavidya Dance Theatre brings the epic Ramayana to life in Kuala Lumpur on June 28

Mahavidya Dance Theatre is presenting Ayodhya Putra, a grand Bharatanatyam retelling of the Ramayana, on June 28, 2026, at Kala Mandapam in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.

Mahavidya Dance Theatre is bringing the epic Ramayana to life in Kuala Lumpur with their upcoming Bharatanatyam dance drama, “Ayodhya Putra” on June 28, 2026 at Kala Mandapam in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.

The performance will begin at 6pm and features 21 dancers, a live orchestra, and a digital screen with English subtitles, with proceeds supporting free classical dance education for underprivileged children.

The production brings to life the ancient tale of Prince Rama and Sita using the expressive Vazhuvoor style of Bharatanatyam.

The event features 21 dancers, a live orchestra and a meaningful charity initiative to support free dance classes for underprivileged children.

The Ramayana, originating in ancient India, has deeply permeated Southeast Asian cultural identity, evolving into the Ramakien in Thailand, Kakawin Ramayana in Indonesia and Hikayat Seri Rama in Malaysia.  Through themes of duty, sacrifice and self-discovery, it continues to resonate across cultures and generations.

The production is choreographed by Mahavidya Dance Theatre founder Sheela Raghavan and will also feature Suddha Nrittam (pure dance), where dancers perform exclusively to the rhythm and patterns of live percussion rather than melodies. The rhythm-driven passages are expected to be among the performance’s most electrifying moments, highlighting the dancer’s discipline, stamina and artistry.

Adding to the richness of the production is a live ensemble performing works by celebrated composers Papanasam Sivan and Nirmala Raghavan. The line-up features Brahmashri J.J. Prathap Sharma on mridangam, Aravind on percussion, Suganya Jegathesan Sharma on vocal and Hariraam Tingyuan Lam on violin.

Beyond its artistic ambition, Ayodhya Putra also carries a meaningful social purpose. Mahavidya Dance Theatre conducts free dance classes for underprivileged children.

Public support for the performance will help sustain that mission, validate artistic endeavours and inspiring young performers.

Invitations for the Ayodhya Putra dance production in Kuala Lumpur are secured via donation.
