Following the success of their first marine excursion in Langkawi, Lush Malaysia has teamed up again with MareCet, Malaysia’s pioneering marine research and conservation NGO, to continue the next conservation-focused journey – Marine Explorer in Sibu Island, Johor.
Unlike the previous Langkawi initiative that focused on dolphin sightings and eco workshops, this 3-day journey brought participants even closer to the wild both marine and human across the untouched beauty of islands that make up Pulau Sibu.

The Marine Explorer experience in Sibu Island offered a raw and real immersion into one of Malaysia’s most hidden marine sanctuaries. Think barefoot days, salty ocean breezes and nights wrapped in nature’s embrace all set against the volcanic rock formations, coral-fringed shores and emerald waters of the Sibu archipelago.
The remote region is home to one of the country’s few remaining dugong populations, nourished by seagrass meadows, while the island itself home to fewer than 200 residents offered a rare window into slow-paced kampung life, where sustainability is not a trend but a way of being, lived in quiet harmony with the ocean.

“Beyond the usual initiative that we are known for like coral planting, the outcomes for this trip would be to learn more about dugong conservation, as well as to create awareness about marine conservation through the Lush Malaysia platform,” said Lush Malaysia director Dr Harvinder Harchand.

“Additionally, we hope to inspire Malaysian citizens to make the necessary commitments towards marine conservation, protecting the beauty of nature and wildlife that is homed to us.
“These commitments include waste reduction, supporting conservation efforts and embracing sustainable habits such as shopping naked products (packaging free) and finding the right ways to recycle products, which are vital to safeguard our marine ecosystems, all in all, leaving the world lusher than we found it,” added Dr Harchand.

The excursion was packed with educational and hands-on learning activities, including dugong edutour, beach cleanup, discovery kampung walk and virgin coconut oil processing.

MareCet co-founder and executive director Dr Louisa Ponnampalam said, “The Marine Explorer is our way of connecting people with Malaysia’s marine life through immersive, low-impact experiences that inspire conservation and with Lush Malaysia as our like-minded partner, we’re able to amplify this message and encourage more Malaysians to protect our oceans.”
At its heart, the Marine Explorer excursion was more than just a conservation effort. It was a symbol of a long-term soul connection with the earth, with the ocean and with a more meaningful and environmentally conscious way of living.
