Get ready for a week filled with creativity, innovation and cultural exchange in the fashion world as Malaysia is set to host the 28th Congress of Federation of Asian Master Tailors at Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, from August 1 to 6, 2024.
The leading Asia tailoring event is expected to attract 300 delegates from six European and 10 Asian countries, including Italy, England, Trinidad & Tobago, Mauritius, UAE, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
Sam Ng Teck Yau, the president of Federation of Tailors’ Guilds Malaysia (FTGM) expressed its honour and excitement in hosting the Federation of Asian Master Tailors Congress in Malaysia after 18 years.
“The 28th Congress of the Federation of Asian Master Tailors underscores Malaysia’s unwavering dedication to excellence in bespoke craftsmanship and the nurturing of emerging talents.
“We are thrilled to present the inventiveness and innovation of our designers to a discerning global audience. This gathering not only honors the deep-rooted heritage of tailoring across Asia, but also stands as evidence of our shared dedication to pushing the boundaries of creativity and craftsmanship within the industry,” Ng said at a press conference held at Plan B, TRX Kuala Lumpur on June 27, 2024.
Also present at the event were Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman Dato’ Yeoh Soon Hin, National Heritage Department intangible heritage division director Dr Eyo Leng Yan, Federation of Tailors’ Guilds Malaysia advisor Datuk Dickson Phang and Malaysian Official Designers Association (Moda) president Jay Ishak.
Ng said the congress also ties in with the Malaysian government’s efforts to promote kebaya, batik and songket as well as traditional culture to foreign guests, with a fashion show programme featuring kebaya, batik and songket fashions.
“We will also arrange for our foreign guests to visit Malaysia’s tourist and art and cultural attractions to assist the government in promoting our tourist attractions, as well as our unique and diverse art and culture to attract more tourists to visit our country,” he added.
The congress theme is “Fashion Odyssey – Uniting Styles, Celebrating Craftsmanship” and presents an opportunity to draw in a broader range of sponsors, exhibitors and delegates, fostering meaningful dialogues and spurring innovation within the field.
The congress promises attendees an immersive and enriching experience, through offering a diverse array of programs, from master classes to fashion showcases.
The 28th Congress of Federation of Asian Master Tailors is supported by Tourism Malaysia, an agency under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
Meanwhile, Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman Dato’ Yeoh Soon Hin in his speech suggested that FTGM utilised the event’s platform to explore the possibility of creating a “Fashion and Design Hub” in Malaysia.
“This “fashion and design hub” initiative, if successfully created, will mean another platform for the Malaysian fashion design industry to expand its market and raise the profile of the country’s fashion design industry. This is a great milestone,” said Yeoh
“More importantly, if this new hub can be linked up to tourism, culture and education sectors, it will not only become a new tourist and cultural attraction and product for Malaysia, but will also attract more tourists, especially fashion enthusiasts to come to our country for travel and consumption, as well as create a new product for Malaysia’s education,” added Yeoh.
