“We choose to educate about the cultural heritage of saree because there are many interesting facts to it, one of which being there are different varieties of sarees, materials, and textiles across India, and there are various ways of draping the saree.

“It has been recorded that there are a total of 108 ways of wearing a saree which makes it unique,” said World Saree Day Malaysia director Bkay Nair.

Among those in attendance were India’s High Commissioner to Malaysia Bommireddy Narasimha Reddy, PSDM president Norhana A. Bakar and Paralympic Council Malaysia president Datuk Seri Megat D. Shahriman Zaharudin.

A traditional Khatak dance performed by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Indian Cultural Centre (NSCBICC) was also presented where the dancers narrated stories through their eyes and expressions.

Bharat Club Kuala Lumpur also showcased 30 different saree materials and draping styles from 30 states (south to north India).

The event saw a good cause being celebrated as part proceeds from the event will go towards supporting the PDSM to cover their expenses.

“We give the proceeds as a donation to PSDM to help obtain additional equipment, vocational career training expenses, and tools in order to help the members of the association to become independent and successful entrepreneurs in the near future,” added Bkay.

A lucky draw was included in the event which gave away prizes including sarees, accessories, gold coins and a trip to Langkawi.
