Herbalife Nutrition’s healthy tips to start the New Year

With 2023 around the corner, Malaysians are starting to set their resolutions for the new year. For many, this includes getting in shape and staying fit.

To help achieve this, the global nutrition company, Herbalife Nutrition, is sharing some tips on how Malaysians can develop healthier lifestyles in the year ahead.

Herbalife Nutrition worldwide nutrition education and training senior director Susan Bowerman said, “This is a time to recharge your body by reviewing your diet and health goals, as well as cleaning out bad habits or poor dietary choices.

“Dark green leafy vegetables are fabulous additions to any meal, as they are full of fibre, minerals, and vitamins.

“Foods like spinach, kale, and bok choy can boost your intake of iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and folate, as well as vitamin K to support bone health and vitamin C to support immunity – all for very few calories.”

Bowerman said managing calorie intake is important for human health, particularly given that the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2019 revealed that out of 50.1% of Malaysian adults, 30.4% were overweight while 19.7% were obese.

“One easy way to clean up your eating habits is to reduce your portion size. Put less on your plate, save extra food for leftovers, or takeaway leftovers when dining out.

“To improve one’s nutrient intake, planning meals on a weekly basis is important. Keeping several go-to recipes reduces the need to opt for take-out meals and fast foods for an easy and quick solution,” she advised

While it is commonly recommended to drink at least eight glasses of water per day to stay hydrated, especially in hot Malaysian weather, Bowerman noted that drinking adequate amounts of water can vary depending on one’s age and activity level.

“Aside from being a dietary supplement that provides digestive benefits, aloe vera juice can support hydration needs.

“The antioxidants in aloe may also help to bolster the body’s antioxidant defense system. While most of your fluids should come from water, many people seek other beverages for a change. For that reason, sodas and high-calorie drinks often line the shelves of grocery and convenience stores.

“Aloe vera juice can be a good alternative but be sure to check the nutrition label for any added sugars or high-calorie ingredients,” she said.

Bowerman shared a few tips for Malaysians to incorporate aloe vera into their diets:

  • Mix aloe vera juice with sparkling water for a refreshing alternative to soda.
  • Mix aloe vera juice with hot or cold tea.
  • Add aloe vera juice to your favourite smoothie or protein shake.

Aloe vera gel, both as a topical gel and as an ingredient in skincare products, is useful for hydrating and cooling the skin, keeping it soft and supple.

“Look for products that have a non-drying formula and consist of silkening, moisturizing ingredients like aloe vera. It will leave your scalp feeling refreshed and your locks looking great,” added Bowerman.
