Cheang Shi Hui, a 25-year-old management consultant from Kuala Lumpur, won the Miss Wilayah Tourism 2023 beauty pageant, beating off nine other contestants to win the title at the pageant final held at NetVerk, Oval Damansara in Petaling Jaya on Sept 11.
The 165cm (5’ 5”) tall winner, also won two subsidiary titles of Miss Photogenic and Miss Glamourous.
Cheang, or Jen by her friends, said after emerging as the winner of Miss Wilayah Tourism 2023: “The overwhelming wave of love and support I’ve received from my dear family, friends and even kind-hearted strangers truly feels surreal. Their unwavering faith in me has left me surprised and profoundly humbled.”
Cheang said that curiosity and her willingness to embrace new experiences drove her to participate in the beauty pageant
“The last pageant journey I joined was six years ago, when I was 19 for Miss Qipao Malaysia. It was a decision born out of curiosity and a desire to embrace new experiences while waiting for my university semester to begin.
“My grandmother, a former pageant queen, serves as my inspiration, igniting a spark of interest in me to explore the path she once walked,” she said.
Asked about her biggest challenge she faced for the competition, Cheang answered: “The challenge I encountered was building self-confidence. There are times where I realized I had been overly critical of myself, scrutinizing imperfections that remained unnoticed by others. Through this journey, I learned that perfection is an illusion, and our imperfections are what make us unique and authentic.”
Cheang knows what she needs to work on, and is ready to work harder as she gets ready to compete at the Miss Malaysia Tourism 2023 national finals.
“Beyond the physical and mental preparation, I’ve taken the challenge to research on local brands that I could work together with to spotlight their creations on the national stage and showcase the beauty of Malaysian-made products to the world,” she said.
The first runner-up was Catherine Yau, 22, a student, followed by Sandra Wong, 19, also a student, as second runner-up.
A total of nine subsidiary titles were also presented to the participants.
“Jens, Catherine and Sandra have earned their crowns with dedication and poise, and they will be competing for the Miss Malaysia Tourism 2023 national title. We wish them all the best in the national finals,” said Miss Malaysia Tourism Wilayah state organiser Tan of NetVerk.
