Yayasan MR DIY, the philanthropic arm of MR DIY Group, is actively bridging the digital divide and reducing electronic waste by refurbishing retired corporate laptops (previously used within MR DIY’s operations) and redistributing them to underserved youths.
On July 1, 2026, the Foundation and Soroptimist International Damansara successfully handed over computing equipment to Sekolah Tunas Bakti.
The handover marked a milestone, bringing the Foundation’s total to 176 refurbished corporate laptops redistributed to students from underserved communities across 20 schools in five states.
By equipping students with refurbished devices, the Foundation directly provides essential tools that supports research, online learning and digital skills development.
The initiative reflects Yayasan MR D.I.Y.’s commitment to both digital inclusion and environmental sustainability, reconditioning used devices into valuable educational resources for students across Malaysia.
Yayasan MR D.I.Y. chief executive officer Dr Zaleha Mohd Mydin said that while technology is critical for modern education, access to devices remains a barrier for some students.
“Through this initiative, we are not only helping students access the tools they need to learn and thrive in a digital environment, but also demonstrating how responsible reuse can create positive outcomes for both communities and the environment.
“Every refurbished laptop represents an opportunity to support a student’s educational journey while reducing unnecessary waste,” he said.
Since the programme began in March 2025, Yayasan MR D.I.Y. has distributed 176 refurbished laptops, representing an estimated value of more than RM 300,000. The initiative has benefited more than 8,000 students and helped divert approximately 530 kg of electronic waste from landfills.
