The Beat Street Dance Competition brought musicians, choreographers and dancers together under one roof.
Nine finalists, comprising street dance groups, strutted their stuff in the finals of the Beat Street Dance Competition 2011 at The Summit Subang USJ shopping mall on April 30.
Rakyat Ritma Cru emerged champions after intense competition in the inaugural event.
The ten-man Rakyat Ritma Cru, ranging from 18 to 27 years old and led by team leader Amin Fikry, 27, walked away with RM5,000 and a trophy.
The Asian Betari Dance Troupe won first runner-up, and a cash prize of 2,500, while Yawa Eco Drum Circle was awarded second runner-up and a cash prize of RM1,000. The other six finalists took home the consolation prize RM500 each.
Finalist No Noise Percussion withdrew due to unavoidable circumstances.
The final competition drew a large crowd on the ground floor concourse of the shopping mall to watch the competing teams daring their rivals with intense routines in front of the panel of expert judges who comprised of choreographer and actor Adam Corrie Lee Abdullah, singer Badri Ibrahim and music great Wan Carefree.
The panel of judges had a really tough time choosing the winner as the standard of skills, techniques and dance movements were so high among the competing teams but after much deliberation, managed to pick the winner.
The competition is unique, being the first of it’s kind that challenges contestants to take the art of music and dance to the extreme by performing live on unplugged music using various instruments such as box drums, recycled instruments and also beat box.
The Beat Street Dance Competition 2011 was presented by The Summit Subang USJ in cooperation with Music Scene Production (M) Sdn Bhd.
Music Scene Production director Gary Amani Abdullah said that due to the great success judging by the hundreds of hopefuls who joined in the earlier elimination rounds, the crowd support, the comments and thanks received, Beat Street Dance Competition 2012 will return bigger, better and tougher next year.
