Global apparel retailer Uniqlo has partnered with Taylor’s International School Puchong on a school outreach programme designed to spark youth engagement and community outreach through the ‘Power of Clothing’ project.

The Power of Clothing project is global initiative by Uniqlo that explores how clothing can do more than meet basic needs, but also protect dignity, promote sustainability and create positive change in society.

As part of Uniqlo’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility, the programme brings students and educators together in an interactive learning experience focused on the impact of clothing, from reducing waste to supporting vulnerable communities.

The Power of Clothing Project was developed to address the often overlook need for children’s clothing in refugee communities, yet is seldom readily donated in sufficient amounts.

The project aims to encourage students to donate their gently used clothes to help ensure refugee children receive clothing that fits, while showing young students how even small actions can foster inclusivity and compassion.

Two workshop sessions were held on May 23 and 27, led by Uniqlo Malaysia’s sustainability team and staff from the Uniqlo Mid Valley Megamall store.

Uniqlo Malaysia staff facilitated the workshop session where over 1,400 primary and secondary students of Taylor’s International School Puchong took part in hands-on activities and discussions on the life cycle of clothing.

During these sessions, over 1,400 students from primary and secondary engaged in hands-on activities and discussions around the life clothing life cycle, circular economy highlighting the importance of sustainable practices and how everyday choices can significantly contribute to a more sustainable future.

Turning learning into tangible action, the students launched a two-week clothing collection drive and gathered about 5,000 pieces of pre-loved clothing to support youth in need.

During the donation ceremony, Taylor’s students presented pre-loved clothing to refugee support representatives in a gesture of solidarity and compassion.

The initiative culminated in a donation ceremony on June 19, where refugee students from Rohingya Community School were welcomed to the campus for a day of student-led activities ahead of World Refugee Day which is observed annually on June 20.

The students’ participation was made possible with the support of the Malaysia Relief Agency (MRA), which facilitated their visit and engagement with the students.

“This experience shows students that small acts, like donating something as simple as clothing, can bring real impact.

“At Uniqlo, we believe clothing has the power to improve lives. We’re proud to involve our staff in this initiative, as we believe it’s important for everyone in Uniqlo to take part in community outreach,”

“As we celebrate our 15th anniversary in Malaysia this year, we remain deeply committed to giving back to the communities we serve,” said Uniqlo Malaysia’s corporate communication and sustainability director Dawn Chow.

She added, “This time, we’re delighted to partner with Taylor’s International School Puchong to empower the next generation to think beyond themselves and take meaningful steps toward a better world,”

Taylor’s International School Puchong principal Jane Kuok said the collaboration with Uniqlo has given their students an opportunity to make a meaningful difference.

“More than just a clothing drive, it reflects the values we aim to instil in our learners – being relevant in addressing real-world issues, taking responsibility for their actions, and showing resilience in creating positive change.

“It’s heartening to see our students lead with care and purpose,” she said.

Taylor’s International School Puchong student leaders and Uniqlo Malaysia staff signal the successful launch of Power of Clothing Project outreach initiative with a thumbs up for its efforts in using clothing to create positive social impact.

The outreach programme is part of Uniqlo’s global Power of Clothing Project, which uses clothing as a tool to educate and support communities. It is also aligned with the brand’s Re.Uniqlo programme, a global initiative that promotes circularity by collecting gently used LifeWear and redistributing it to people in need, including refugees, disaster survivors and underserved communities.

This year marks Uniqlo’s 15th anniversary in Malaysia, a milestone underscoring its long-term dedication to sustainable innovation and positive local impact, demonstrated through various initiatives like this school outreach.
