The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will present a musical grandeur themed A Cosmic Symphony, on the evening of Sept 13, 2025 at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP), Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC).
Under the baton of its music director Junichi Hirokami, MPO will perform a work entitled The Planets, composed by Gustav Holst between 1914 to 1917 which received its premiere in 1920.
With such originality, imagination and sensationalism, this work remains by far Holst’s most popular work. The symphonic suite depicts the astrological associations conjured up by each of the known planets of his time, with an extraordinary orchestral virtuosity.

The performance will witness MPO’s collaboration with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, a renowned orchestra founded in 1946 and reputable for opera and ballet works. It has performed in 58 cities around the globe.
The show will also feature local choirs, the UCSI Chorale and Dames of Harmonia.

The concert will first open with Samuel Barber’s Toccata Festiva which was written for a grand ceremonial event in 1960 by the Philadelphia Orchestra. Organist Mari Ohki will perform this work on the DFP’s majestic Klais Pipe Organ. She is the first Japanese artist to win the 3rd International Dietrich Buxtehude Organ Competition in Germany.
This will be followed by Johann Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in D minor featuring MPO’s violinists Peter Danis and Issey Kobayashi.

MPO said it will continue to strive to provide the best performances and diverse programming accessible to everyone. It said the audiences have been their inspiration, motivating them through their hard work, hours of practice, commitment and challenges at every level.
“All our achievements are due to your love and support. Be the instruments that keep us alive,” it added.
The MPO hopes that the public will show its support through donations, contributing to its mission of developing local talents and engaging audience with a diverse selection of music and performances.
