The 49th Bon Odori Festival 2025 is co-organised by the Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur, the Japanese School of Kuala Lumpur, Embassy of Japan in Malaysia and Sunway City. It is known for its festive atmosphere, attracting thousands of visitors to experience Japanese culture in the country.
This year marks the Visit Selangor Year 2025 and the Selangor State Government has given its full support to the festival.
Previous editions of the Bon Odori were held at the Shah Alam National Sports Complex (also known as the Panasonic Sports Stadium).
Aimed at fostering and promoting cultural ties between Malaysia and Japan, this largest Japanese cultural festival in Malaysia features Japanese Bon Odori dances, music and food, while also showcasing Malaysian cultural performances by Perbadanan Adat Melayu & Warisan Negeri Selangor and Sunway Lagoon professional dancers.
The Bon Odori Festival 2025 is supported by the Japanese Chamber of Trade and Industry, Malaysia (JACTIM), Tourism Selangor, Majlis Bandaraya Subang Jaya and Polis Diraja Malaysia, Selangor Exco Tourism Office, Invest Selangor Berhad and Pingmin Market (market partner).
Bon Odori, a Japanese folk dance, is always accompanied by singing and dancing with the lively rhythm of drums, gongs and flutes. The mid-year festival is held annually as a popular get-together summer event in every district of every city in Japan.
In Malaysia, the festival started in 1977 as a small affair for Japanese expatriates and their children to experience Japanese culture. It has since grown into a large annual event that attracts over 30,000 visitors annually, making it the biggest Japanese cultural event in Malaysia, and possibly even the largest Bon Odori Festival outside of Japan.
This event provides a good opportunity for everyone to experience Japanese culture first-hand, and they are encouraged to participate in the Bon Odori folk dance.
