Sungei Wang Plaza’s annual lantern parade lighted up the streets of Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur on Sept 15, 2024, as a crowd of thousands enjoyed the show in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival and Malaysia Day.
This year, Malaysia Day on Sept 16 coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival which falls on Sept 17.
The event, with Tourism Malaysia’s support, was officially launched by Tourism Malaysia deputy director general (promotion II) Samuel Lee.
“This year marks our 8th edition and 10th year of organizing the lantern parade which is also the largest lantern parade in Bukit Bintang.
“As our theme, ‘Moonlit Blossom, A Lunar Reunion’, we welcome everyone back to the familiar Sungei Wang Plaza, where it feels like home, sharing the warmth of Mid-Autumn family reunions while embracing the traditional essence of the festival,” Joseph Teo, general manager of Sungei Wang Plaza said in his speech at the event.
Following the 40 oriental drums performance by BSY Cultural Arts that echoed through the air and a fireworks display illuminating Bukit Bintang’s night sky, thousands of attendees joined the lantern parade, led by over 30 lion dance troupes and a mesmerizing LED dragon, creating a dazzling spectacle as they paraded through the streets.
More than 1,000 lanterns and Malaysian flags were distributed to shoppers and tourists who lighted up Bukit Bintang and celebrated Malaysia’s vibrant multicultural heritage.
This year’s double celebration was packed with various activities. The all-day event at Sungei Wang Plaza featured interactive games, festive performances, craft workshops, lucky draws and free giveaways.
Celebrities from 8TV, including Owen Yap, Gary Yap, Ching Yee and many others, as well as Eight FM announcers Kyan and Ke Qing joined the parade and gave out gifts.
Last year’s “Mid-Autumn Fun Under The Moon” Lantern Parade earned Sungei Wang Plaza the silver award for PPK Malaysia’s “Best Experiential Marketing Awards 2023 – 2024”. The award presentation was held before the launch.
“We are deeply honoured by this recognition within our industry, and we are thrilled to share this joy with our partners, tenants and shoppers this year on our stage,” said Teo.
Partners and sponsors which supported the event included 8TV (media partner), Eight FM (official radio station), AirAsia Ride (official ride service), JUMPA, KL Hop On Hop Off, BSY Cultural Arts, Magnum, Cuckoo, Wonderlab, The Batik Shop, Taste of Asia, Mixue, HWC Coffee, Beryls Chocolate and Saudi Burger.
