Spring cleaning of unwanted medications and helping the environment

The Alpro Foundation has partnered with over 600 schools nationwide, educating more than 300,000 students on how to safely dispose of unwanted or expired medications.

Many households are clearing out the old to make way for the New Year. But when it comes to unwanted or expired medications, do you know the proper way to dispose of them?

Improperly disposing of pharmaceuticals, such as flushing them down the toilet or tossing them in the trash, can pose serious risks to our environment and health.

Malaysia is highly dependent on its water sources, with 99% of the water supply for domestic use deriving from surface water such as streams and rivers.

Alarmingly, the World Economic Forum’s research shows that the concentration of pharmaceuticals in waterways is reaching dangerous levels, threatening human health and hindering progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of clean drinking water and sanitation for all by 2030.

In response to this growing concern, the Alpro Foundation, the CSR arm of Alpro Pharmacy – Malaysia’s largest prescription pharmacy chain – launched the Safe Medication Disposal Campaign in 2021.

This pioneering initiative aims to raise awareness and encourage the proper disposal of unwanted and expired medications among Malaysians.

So far, the foundation has achieved notable milestones:

  • Engagement with educational institutions: The foundation has collaborated with over 600 schools nationwide, reaching more than 300,000 students, including university attendees, to educate them on safe medication disposal practices.
  • Nationwide disposal bin accessibility: Safe medication disposal bins are now available at all 280 Alpro Pharmacy outlets, offering convenient locations for the public to dispose of unwanted medications responsibly.

Building on its successes, the Alpro Foundation is set to amplify its impact with new initiatives in 2025.

A key highlight is the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) to embark on a two-year research and community education programme involving members of the public and pharmaceutical companies. This programme aims to:

  • Reach more than 350,000 individuals, including primary, secondary and tertiary students, as well as corporate entities.
  • Equip families with the knowledge and tools to dispose of medications safely, targeting 250,000 families through school talks and community outreach programmes.

In addition, Alpro Foundation plans to construct a “Little Red House” outside its headquarters to serve as a visible landmark for passing audiences, creating awareness about safe medication disposal. The public can dispose of their medications responsibly at the house, where a QR code will provide further information on safe disposal practices.

“We’ve observed a significant increase in clinics bringing in unneeded medications, highlighting the urgent need for more education and advocacy,” said Alpro Foundation chief executive officer Ostwin Paw.

“By fostering awareness and providing accessible solutions, we’re not only protecting our water sources but also paving the way for a healthier and more sustainable future.”
