The Down Syndrome Association of Malaysia (PSDM) Charity Hi-Tea and Fashion Show will be held at Dewan Tun Abdul Razak, Bank Rakyat Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur on March 19, 2023.
This art and cultural charity hi-tea event aims to generate additional funds for career training and learning expenses for PSDM, and at the same time educate about the uniqueness of saree as well as to introduce the culture of wearing saree in Malaysia.
“I hope that this event can give an opportunity for PSDM to show their capabilities and potential while giving others the chance to learn more about our traditional clothes,” said Bkay Nair, the organising chairlady of the event, at a press conference at Bunglow 37, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur on March 1, 2023.
Also present at the press conference were OKU Sentral president Senator Datuk Ras Adiba Radzi and PSDM president Norhana A. Bakar.
A fashion show called World Saree Day Malaysia (WSDM) will showcase over 60 sarees of various materials, textiles and draping with a highlight of ‘kanchipuram’ and ‘banarasi’ sarees, which are among the most expensive Indian traditional garments.
The fashion show will also see the participation of 10 experienced Down Syndrome models.
There will be also performances from PSDM, National Culture and Arts Department (JKKN) and Bharat Club Kuala Lumpur.
“This event is a merge between charity, education, culture and fashion.
“WSDM aims to bring a social impact towards the community by encouraging the young generations to continue to love and appreciate the art and culture of various races in Malaysia.
“WSDM will strive to preserve the diverse cultures of the many races in Malaysia, as well as to encourage people of the public to wear their respective traditional clothes to forge unity among the various races while cultivating the spirit of love and respect for traditional dances among the current generation so that it is not forgotten” added Bkay, who is the director of Bkay Nair Resources.
PSDM is a non-profit organisation, that established in 2001, has a charitable volunteer that takes care of the development and fights for the rights of individuals with Down Syndrome in Malaysia through the perspective of health, welfare, education, vocational career training and employment.
In PSDM, Down Syndrome kids are exposed to various skills such as baking, cleaning their room, washing clothes and various other skills to help them in their daily life.
The funds generated will be used to help PSDM to obtain additional equipment, vocational career training expenses and tools in order to help the members of the association to become independent and successful entrepreneurs in the near future.
