Citizen Journalists Malaysia (CJMY) spoke to three of the finalists Carlvia Tiong, Xanielle Lee and Veronica Justin who were excited to be selected in this year’s lineup of finalists and wanted to make a positive difference.

Carlvia Tiong, 28, an aesthetician, is excited to be a finalist in Miss Malaysia Planet 2019 and she’s all for helping the planet.

“I can help with raising awareness about environmental protection, especially educating the younger generation about the importance of treating our environment with care and making a difference.

“I would like to organise tree planting campaign so that we will have a better climate and more pleasant planet for our future generation to live,” she said.

The 154 cm (5’ 1”) tall Sabahan who carries her own skin-care products from USA loves travelling.

“I love to travel because you are actually experiencing learning in real life, not reading it in a book. It is an opportunity to get in touch with yourself and appreciating your life more,” she said.

Carlvia is a novice to the beauty pageant business. Considering it was her first ever pageant, she has been doing so well that she made it to the finals.

“This is my first time participating in a pageant.  My family and friends encouraged me to join the Miss Malaysia Planet pageant and after thinking it through, I decided to join the pageant because it is a great opportunity and a good platform to discover and re-discover myself and improve my strengths, build up more self-confidence and enhance my personality,” she said.

Xanielle Lee, 29, from Kuala Lumpur and a finalist of Miss Malaysia Planet 2019 had worked as an air-hostess for nine years and is now in real estate full time. She has a love for nature.

“As always I love nature. I’m very environmental friendly at heart. I start with using recycle bag when I do grocery rather than keep using plastic.

“I am strong never to throw rubbish anywhere and will always keep the rubbish and throw it away only when I find a rubbish bin, and best if it’s a recycle bin.

“When it comes to using lightings and water at home, I will only use it when it is necessary and I will never leave a leaking pipe unfixed,” she said.

Xanielle realised that for future generations to survive, something must be done and she will do her part to protect the planet.

“I wish to create more awareness in saving our planet for brighter future by educating and encouraging people to plant a tree and secondly I would seriously like to ban those vehicles causing harmful gas emission to the environment that caused climate change,” she said.

Like Carlvia, Xanielle at 166 cm (5’ 5”) tall, has never competed in pageants before but has been voted champion twice as Best Dressed Queen in company dinners.

“Joining beauty pageants has always been my dream besides becoming an air hostess which I have achieved.  I always admire and just love how elegant and feminine beauty queens are.

“Being an air hostess and finding time to go for pageant wasn’t easy due to my tight schedule of flying. Now that I had stopped flying and the golden opportunity came when I met Madam Lim and I knew it’s the chance I must grab for now because I’m already 29 and most pageants only accept contestants up to maximum age 27 years old. So it’s now or I’ll have to wait till I get married and have a kid to come back for Mrs Malaysia pageants,” she said with a grin.

Xanielle said she’s happy being shortlisted as one of the finalists and will try her best to fulfil her dream. In her leisure time, she enjoys cooking, travelling and fitness.

Mrs Malaysia Petite World 2019 finalist Veronica, a forest conservator, says winning the title will give her an opportunity to inspire others in saving the environment.

Veronica Justin, 31, a Dusun from Sabah is a finalist of Mrs Malaysia Petite World 2019. Despite her petite size at 150 cm (4’ 11”) tall, she’s a pretty strong woman.

“I have set my mind and no matter if I win or lose, participating in the pageant itself is an achievement for me. It helps to build up my self-confidence and the experience gained is priceless. I got the chance to challenge myself to do something I’ve never imagined I could do. This beauty pageant is going to be my influencer platform for women out there,” said the mother of two children, aged 4 and 2.

To prepare for the grand final, Veronica is utilising a four-pronged strategy that includes body weight, lifestyle, diet and mental condition.

“I go to the gym once or twice a week for an hour to maintain my ideal body weight and to stay healthy. I also go for jogging every morning for fitness purpose.

“As for diet, I eat sufficient vegetables, fruits and rice daily and as we know, water is the most important element that our body needs so I drink lots of water. I take small quantity of rice everyday to make sure I have enough energy to do my daily routine which is getting to work from 7am to 5 pm, reaching home at 6pm for jogging 20 minutes and doing household cores at 6.30pm,” she said.

Veronica is a subject matter expert on forest conservation. She has a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from Universiti Putra Malaysia.

“If I win the title, it will give me an opportunity to inspire others in saving our environment. As a forest conservator, I will voice out the importance of forests for human life because they provide resources such as storing carbon, producing oxygen and reducing global warming.

“I will do awareness campaigns such as tree planting, greening and social activities regarding forest conservation to raise public awareness about the importance of forest in life,” she said.

Veronica enjoys hobbies such as singing, dancing, travelling and workouts in the gym with her husband-cum-coach.
