PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Bhd (PNBMV), a wholly owned subsidiary of Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), has unveiled the newly upgraded park, Taman Kejiranan at Perumahan Awam (PA) Seri Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur, marking the latest milestone of the second park under the Merdeka 118 Public Realm Improvement Programme.

The initiative is a collaboration between PNB Merdeka Ventures, Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Think City to revitalise public spaces, between the Merdeka 118 precinct and its surrounding neighbourhoods, under Warisan KL – a national agenda to rejuvenate Kuala Lumpur’s historic core through people-focused urban renewal.

Spanning 16,000 square feet and located less than 1 km from Menara Merdeka 118, the new park provides more than 7,500 residents with an accessible and welcoming green space designed for leisure, recreation, and community interaction.

In marking the occasion, Kuala Lumpur mayor Dato’ Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said, “This meaningful initiative is a strong example of how Kuala Lumpur can progress through community-based programmes. By working hand-in-hand with public and private partners, we are able to create tangible impact that directly benefits the community and translates into lasting positive outcomes.”

She added, “Our elderly now have spaces to stay active, while families and children can enjoy a safe and welcoming place. Initiatives like this bring us closer to realising our vision of A Prosperous City for All by 2030.”

The Seri Sarawak upgrade focused on transforming an underused neighbourhood space into a vibrant shared community hub.

The upgraded facilities costing about RM800,000 include children’s play areas, shaded seating, safer lighting, landscaped gardens, improved walkways and drainage, and new community spaces to promote active living and stronger bonds among residents.

PNBMV’s commitment to sustainable methods was also a key focus, with the use of durable, low-maintenance materials, native plant landscaping and permeable pavements for stormwater management to ensure the park remains environmentally friendly and cost-effective to maintain over the long term.

PNBMV CEO Dato’ Tengku Ab. Aziz Tengku Mahmud said, “We are encouraged to see how the first park at PA Jalan Hang Tuah has made a real difference for its community. The upgrade has benefitted over 800 residents and the park has quickly become a lively space where families and friends come together.

“Building on that success, we are pleased to bring the same spirit to PA Seri Sarawak, which will now benefit its own community.

“From the very beginning, our vision has been to ensure that Merdeka 118 grows in harmony with the surrounding neighbourhoods, and this programme is testament to this vision under the wider Warisan KL initiative that is revitalising the historic heart of Kuala Lumpur.”

Think City managing director Dato’ Hamdan Abdul Majeed said neighbourhood parks are not just green spaces but are social infrastructure that strengthen bonds, well-being and a sense of belonging.

“The transformation of PA Seri Sarawak, achieved together with PNB Merdeka Ventures, DBKL and the residents, demonstrates how community-centred placemaking can turn an overlooked corner into a shared asset. Within the larger Warisan KL story, it is these people-first interventions that keep our city liveable, sustainable and loveable,” he said.

As with the earlier initiative at PA Jalan Hang Tuah, Think City alongside PNBMV also initiated engagement sessions with the residents of PA Seri Sarawak to ensure their active involvement in the project.

PA Seri Sarawak Residents’ Association chairman Mohd Azmi Zakaria said the upgrading of their park has given them a renewed sense of belonging.

“For many of us, it shows that our community matters and that we are not left behind in the city’s progress. We are deeply grateful for this transformation, which will inspire residents to take even greater care of our shared spaces and strengthen the spirit of togetherness in PA Seri Sarawak.”

The PA Seri Sarawak project marks the second of several planned public realm upgrades around the Merdeka 118 precinct. PNBMV is committed to continuing similar initiatives within the precinct, ensuring that the benefits of urban renewal extend beyond Merdeka 118 and into the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s public housing communities.
