McMillan Woods Global, through its corporate social responsibility initiative McM Cares, donated a set of bronchoscope to the Sungai Buloh Hospital, the country’s main treatment facility for Covid-19.

Dato’ Seri Dr. Raymond Liew, founder of McMillan Woods Global and McM Cares programmes said the donation was in response to a plea by the hospital for another bronchoscope as the current solo unit is inadequate with the increasing number of Covid-19 intensive care unit patients.

“When we received an urgent plea to MCM Cares for help from Sungai Buloh Hospital director Dr. Kuldip Kaur for a bronchoscope, we quickly reach out for donors to purchase the device so we can help out Covid-19 intensive care unit patients at the hospital,” said Liew.

The bronchoscope is a medical instrument that can help doctors look at the lungs and air passages of patients, especially in cases with pulmonary collapse and consolidation due to mucus plug, and help the diagnosis in Covid-19 patients and determine the appropriate treatment.

“With the increasing new cases of Covid-19 reported daily nationwide, at McM Cares, we must now come together and act in the present, navigating through the fault lines that have been exposed as well as those that lie ahead, as we rebuild the nation by shaping a better sustainable future where the demand for public services, especially healthcare such as hospitals, is high. The future of our nation will be determined not by what the pandemic does, but by how we, collectively respond to it,” said Liew.

Liew quickly gathered a few generous donors with the help of Dato’ Sri Shamir Nandy to raise the fund needed to purchase the specialized instrument from Germany, an order for the instrument which took about 2-3 weeks to be delivered.

“McM Cares successfully raised RM150,000 to purchase the much needed instrument for the hospital,” said Liew.

Dr. Kuldip Kaur thanked McM Cares for their generosity as the hospital required more bronchoscopes in different ICUs so that multiple cases can be treated at the same time.

“On behalf of McMillan Woods, I wish to accord our heartfelt thanks to all our generous contributors, especially Dato’ Sri Shamir Nandy, Dato’ Dr Lai Kim Teng, Dato’ Kay Johan, Perdana University, Dato’ Azizan Jaffar, Dato’ Sri Albert Wong, Jasmine Hew, Dato’ Sri Dr How Kok Choong and Dato’ Razman.

“Other donors who also contributed to funding this endeavour are Jeevan Mohana Sundram, Dato’ Siva Ananthan, William Arul, Datuk CTY, Dato’ Paul Ow, Shweta Nandy, Raje, McMea, Jane Leong, Tan Soon Kiat and Philp Lim.”

“On behalf of the patients from Sungai Buloh Hospital, thank you for your generous contributions. Each of you contributor is an angel to them,” said Liew.

“Under our McM Cares programme, we believe strongly in a joint effort involving all the medical doctors and the financial aid that will lead to a better process and greater community support. We are pleased to announce that the pooled fund collected exceeded the target.”

Liew said through the immense efforts of McM Cares programme, they were able to surpass the fundraising target of RM137,370 and with the surplus of RM12,630, he decided to top it up to RM20,000 to support struggling hawkers by ordering food from them to feed the hungry amid the pandemic through the collaboration with Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia.

At the hospital, Liew also purchased six copies of the book titled Emersion – Transcending the Tide. The Sungai Buloh Hospital Covid-19 Journey, priced at RM150 each, to support the Postgraduate Society of Sungai Buloh Hospital, the publisher of the book.

The book tells the personal stories contributed by the staff and frontliners of Sungai Buloh Hospital as it traversed the Covid-19 pandemic.
