The design created by Mell Sulaman from Sabah won Malaysia Top National Costume Designer 2025 competition held at Sabah International Convention Centre on August 31, 2025.

Held in conjunction with Malaysia’s 68th National Day, the Miss Universe Malaysia Organization (MUMO) said Mell will be designing the national costume of Miss Universe Malaysia 2025 to be presented on the global stage at the 74th Miss Universe pageant in Thailand this November.

The winning design captivated judges with its bold storytelling and flawless craftsmanship.

The winning design by Mell Sulaiman is inspired by the vast blue sea and the splendor of traditional arts, radiating the grandeur of the Bajau Sama heritage.

Inspired by the vast blue sea and the splendor of traditional arts, the national costume radiates the grandeur of the Bajau Sama heritage. Shimmering blue-green hues symbolise the clarity of the ocean, while the red, yellow, and black ethnic patterns evoke the courage, strength, and legacy of the ancestors. A golden crown-like headpiece that resembles a serimpak embodies the dignity and elegance of Bajau Sama women.

The outfit is further adorned with beads, gold-toned embellishments, and the Duang Bajau prop, reflecting the vibrancy and beauty of the culture.

The National Costume round is one of the most anticipated segments of the Miss Universe pageant, where audiences worldwide tune in to admire elaborate creations representing nations across the globe.

The winning designer will work closely with MUMO to prepare the national costume for Miss Universe Malaysia 2025.

The winner of the competition was selected by a distinguished panel of judges that included MUMO national director Charissa Chong and Miss Universe Malaysia 2024 Sandra Lim.

“This marks the first time MUMO has taken part in a notable costume design competition, providing talented Malaysians the opportunity to create our national costume for the world stage.

“The designer who has won the competition will be working closely with Miss Universe Malaysia Organization to prepare the national costume of the winner of Miss Universe Malaysia 2025 on the global stage at the 74th Miss Universe pageant in Thailand,” said Chong.

Beyond the competition, the event also served as a celebration of Malaysia’s 68th National Day, featuring cultural performances, design showcases, and interactive community activities.

“This is not just a competition but also about telling Malaysia’s story to the world. This evening celebrated the many cultures that shape Malaysia, showing how our differences come together to create a harmony unlike any other. Through every performance and every design, we highlighted the many facets of our nation’s journey and how they can be reimagined with creativity for the world,” said PPASM chairman Jawed Khan.

The Malaysia Top National Costume Designer 2025 Competition stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to nurturing creativity and embracing the richness of Malaysia’s character. This competition has allowed MUMO and PPASM to demonstrate their support for local talent while presenting a creation that serves as a meaningful expression of Malaysia’s progress.

The winning design will carry Malaysia’s story with boldness, innovation, and honour before a global audience.

The Miss Universe Malaysia 2025 gala night will be held on September 12, 2025 at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Autograph Collection, where the next Miss Universe Malaysia will be crowned.
