The Malaysia Global United Pageant (MGUP) returns to the centre stage after a long absence with its 2023 edition, ready to host its most impactful pageant charity event on July 1 at the Grand Ballroom. The Top, Komtar in Georgetown, Penang.
This was announced by event organiser Dare 2 Dream Management at a press conference held at The Top, Komtar on June 10.
Traccie Chan, the founder of Dare 2 Dream Management, stated during the event: “Through this pageant, we hope to provide an opportunity to contestants to fulfill their dreams while contributing to the community through the pageant’s “Queen for Kids” advocacy, especially for children with cancer.”
MGUP is the Malaysian edition of The Global United Pageant, a US-based pageant that focuses on empowering women and young girls while raising awareness and funds for childhood cancer issues.
Chan said MGUP promotes the Gold Ribbon childhood cancer awareness program in Malaysia through the Light It Up Gold campaign.
“To align our efforts with this cause, this year we are embarking on various programs to benefit children with cancer and their families through MGUP23, such as family photoshoot, granting wishes to cancer-stricken children and family outings with a special invitation to attend MGUP 2023 final, and providing angpow and goody bags,” said Chan, who is MGUP pageant director and winner of Mrs Global United Lifetime Queen (USA) 2017 and Mrs Global United 2016.
Present at the event were Rose Charities Malaysia chairman Dato’ Lawrence Cheah, Persatuan Dermawan Jishan Bukit Mertajam chairman Datuk Tan Kok Aun and treasurer Ng Yah Ling, National Cancer Society Malaysia administration manager Petronilla Joseph and Miss Global United Pageant 2023 Ambassador Datin Joyce Teoh.
Also present were various dignitaries and celebrities, sponsors and partners, invited guests and members of the media.
Chan said this year MGUP 2023 is also supporting two non-profit organisations for their charitable activities – National Cancer Society of Malaysia and Persatuan Dermawan Jishan Bukit Mertajam.
The National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) is setting up the very first Homes of Hope in Penang which will provide free accommodation and support services to poor cancer patients who are living outside the state and undergoing treatment at Penang General Hospital.
To date, the Light It Up Gold campaign has raised more than RM 300,000 to various organisations and individuals in need and helped more than 300 children.
The press conference also saw the crowning of Malaysia Global United 2023 Ambassadors and Charity Queens in recognition of their dedication and contribution as Queen for Kids. They were crowned by Traccie Chan.
The recipients were: Datin Joyce Teoh (MGUP 2023 Ambassador), Kiki Tan Kar Yen (Charity Queen), Evonne Eng Guik Hwa (Charity Queen), Fong Ying Ying (Community Service Ambassador), Irene Tan (Charity Ambassador), Jovin Ooi (Charisma Ambassador) and Frennie Tan (Goodwill Ambassador).
The grand final of the pageant on July 1, with a fundraiser charity dinner and various performances from Hong Kong and local artistes, will feature 14 finalists vying for the titles of Miss, Mrs and Classic champions.
