Mahkota Medical Centre (MMC), a member of HMI Medical, has launched Malaysia’s Next-Gen Smart Ward in conjunction with its 30th anniversary.
The MMC’s initiative is a visionary leap towards redefining patient care through the adoption of smart health technologies, leading the way for the future of digital healthcare.
The initiative builds on MMC’s successful deployment of its Hospital Information System (HIS), seamlessly integrating IoT-driven devices and digital workflows to transform the care experience for patients.
Mahkota Medical Centre chief executive officer Chin Yee Teo said the launch of its Next-Gen Smart Ward initiative marked a significant milestone in its ambition of becoming a truly smart hospital.
“With real-time updates, our healthcare professionals can respond more quickly and accurately, enabling our nurses and doctors to dedicate more quality time to patients.
‘The streamlined design of the Next-Gen Smart Ward also ensures personalised care while empowering our healthcare professionals to resolve issues with greater efficiency,” she said.
Some key features of the Next-Gen Smart Ward include:
- Real-Time Monitoring: Automatically captures patient’s vital signs and clinical data, reducing manual recording time by 34% and eliminating 67% of manual administrative procedures.
- Streamlined Operations: Nurses save 90% of their time when viewing vital information at a glance and achieve 64% faster response times for critical notifications and actions.
- Task Simplification: 100% elimination of manual data entry ensures accuracy and prevents human errors.
- Time Efficiency: 37% faster time from discharge initiation to dispensing take-home drugs.
- Patient-Centred Tools: Real-time updates on discharge, procedures, and meal plans enhance patient satisfaction scores by 87%.

With customised real-time monitoring systems and automated tools for healthcare professionals and patient communication, the Next-Gen Smart Ward heightens responsiveness and empowers doctors, nurses, and patients to make more informed decisions about their health.
To ensure the Next-Gen Smart Ward meets the demands of patient-centric healthcare systems, MMC carried out an intensive two-month pilot program in selected wards.
This initiative unlocked the capabilities of the new Next-Gen Smart Ward technology, setting the stage for a smooth and impactful hospital-wide rollout.
Results from the pilot programme include
- Faster and Safer Care: The speed of response for critical report notifications and actions taken has improved by 16%.
- Enhanced Engagement: Patients can now actively participate in their care through self-service tools, improving their overall warded experience. Specific patient requests were attended to 22% faster, enhancing patient satisfaction rates and overall comfort in the ward.
- Bedside Empowerment: Doctors can explain diagnostic results directly at the bedside using integrated digital tools, fostering more insightful discussions between doctors and patients.
- Operational Efficiency: Enhanced safety protocols through automated ID scanning reduce errors during procedures.
Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh graced the launch of the Next-Gen Smart Ward event at MMC.
In his speech, Ab Rauf underscored his unwavering support for innovations that will enhance Malacca’s reputation as a leading healthcare hub.
“Digital transformation initiatives like the Next-Gen Smart Ward launch at MMC are instrumental to attracting medical tourists, which aligns with national ambitions to establish Malaysia as a premier medical tourism destination,” he said.
The transformative initiative, developed in partnership with Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, signals a bold new chapter in evolving the way healthcare professionals interact with patients in the ward.
The event also witnessed the signing of acMemorandum of Understanding (MoU) between HMI Medical and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital to exchange experiences and knowledge in smart hospital implementation and digital transformation projects.
