Lesley Cheam Wei Yeng from Kuala Lumpur emerged as the winner of the coveted Miss Universe Malaysia 2022 pageant at the grand final gala held at M Hotel & Resort, Kuala Lumpur on October 7.
The 26-year-old beat 12 other contestants to walk away with home prizes worth RM200,000 as well as a Habib Jewels 10-carat diamond white gold tiara named “Reflection” worth RM2.58 million.
Cheam was crowned by Miss Universe Malaysia 2020 winner Francisca Luhong James.
Standing tall at 166cm (5’ 5”), the assistant manager in product marketing also bagged two subsidiary titles of Miss Radiant Confidence and Miss Schwarzkopf Most Beautiful Hair.
She will represent Malaysia at the 71st Miss Universe pageant in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA on January 14, 2023,
Cheam, who has a bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical and health science from University of Nottingham, is a business minded person who is inspired by entrepreneur and business magnate Elon Musk and would love to delve into his mind and find out how such a successful person views life.
On her preparation strategy for the upcoming Miss Universe world final which is just three months away, the newly crowned Lesley said that strengthening her mental state was her priority right now.
“It is a lot of responsibility and stress once we step up on the international stage. So, all the preparation needed will start from now, including the ones suggested by Datin Elaine, which are practicing my catwalk, public speaking skills and Q&A session,” she said.
Datin Elaine Daly is the national director of Miss Universe Malaysia Organization (MUMO).
MUMO said the Miss Universe Malaysia 2022 theme of ‘Beauty Beyond You’ reflected the spirits of the competition where these young women were given the opportunity to champion a cause that they are passionate about while competing to shine among others.
The first runner-up title went to Ajunee Kaur, 20 from Kuala Lumpur, while Tee Wan Ying, 25 from Pahang was named second runner-up.
The gala night’s panel of judges consisted of seven notable personalities and industry players who were Makeup Miracle Academy and Workshop founder Kenny Yee, Glojas Aesthetic Clinic CEO Datin Selwinder Kaur, M Resort operations director Don Teo, Rizman Nordin co-founder and director Rizman Ruzaini, La Jung Aesthetic Clinic medical director and aesthetic medical practitioner Dr Karen Po, creative director and fashion stylist Andrea Wong, and Miss Universe Malaysia 2019 Shweta Sekhon.
The event was attended by the who’s who in the local business, media, fashion and entertainment industry. It was co-hosted by actor and TV host Hansen Lee and British-Singaporean fashion model and TV personality Aimee Cheng-Bradshaw.
This year, the annual pageant was presented by La Jung Aesthetic Clinic. Other sponsors were Bloop Malaysia, Dermalogica, Elpis Models, FireFit Malaysia, GHD Malaysia, Glojas Aesthetic, Habib Jewels, Makeup Miracle, Schwarzkopf, Spritzer, The Fish Bowl, Tisserand Malaysia and Wax Candy The Wax Bar.
