Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching has launched a new initiative to provide free tablets to needy students and families from B40 groups in Kulai constituency who cannot afford proper devices for their education needs during the current Covid-19 pandemic.
The pandemic should not be an obstacle for students to seek knowledge. Students will be able to use the tablets to participate in PdPR online learning sessions, she said in a Facebook post.
The Education Ministry has introduced a system known as Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran di Rumah (PdPR) or ‘Teaching and Learning at Home’ which involves learning via various online methods to contain the spread of Covid-19 infection among students under the new norm.
“The students’ determination to seek knowledge really touched my heart. Some are willing to go over to their uncle’s house to borrow a mobile phone for learning purposes. Some go to relative’s house every day to borrow mobile phone to take online lessons. I hope this initiative can make it easier for students to continue learning even after the disruption caused by the pandemic.
“The spirit of learning hard is enough to make me move. Hopefully the students will be able to receive quality education after getting free tablets. Their determination will lead to success later on,” she said in the post.
Teo thanked the public who donated generously to this program. She said funds collected from the public will be used to initially procure 50 tablets for needy students, mostly in Form Four and Five from B40 families.
The list of names are taken directly from schools as the teachers have more detailed information about their students’ needs, and tablets will be provided for these students.
Teo also welcomed the public to contribute used equipment such as computers, tablets and other digital devices or donate cash so that more students from needy families would benefit from the program.
