Chance for artists to show their creativity in recreating comic characters contest

The Taiwan-Malaysia Classic Comic Character Illustration Competition 2021 is now open for entries.

The Taiwan-Malaysia Classic Comic Character Illustration Competition 2021 is calling for entries from Malaysia and Taiwan to contribute with the best recreated classic comic characters.

The competition is jointly organized by the Malaysia Comicker Union, the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia and Taipei Comic Artist Labour Union.

Malaysia Comicker Union president Lau Shaw Ming said the competition allows artists to truly shine with their creativity while recreating their beloved classic comic characters.

“We would love to see as many artists involved to use their creativity through recreating classic comic characters and turning them into unique creations more stunning than the original versions,” he said, adding that participants can only use Taiwanese and Malaysian classic comic characters to create illustrations for the competition.

Participants can submit multiple works to increase their chances of winning but can only win one prize.

Lau pointed out that all entries are only used for non-commercial profit-making purposes for cultural exchanges between Taiwan and Malaysia, and the copyright of the characters is owned by the publisher or the comic artist.

He revealed that winners will have their winning artwork featured in the Taiwan-Malaysia International Comic Week.

Of the public response to the competition, Lau said, “We are delighted to have received more than 30 entries so far. We expect last minute to reach more than 100 entries.”

The closing date of the competition is June 30, 2021.
