MR DIY leads successful Sungai Melaka clean-up

MR DIY team picked up over 1,000 kg of garbage along Sungai Melaka through its #DIY4Sungai initiative to clean up and restore the natural beauty of the riverfront area.

Home retailer MR DIY recently carried out a successful volunteer river clean-up on Sungai Melaka, from where over 1,000 kg of garbage were picked up and disposed of responsibly.

Organized by MR DIY under its community outreach programme called #DIY4Sungai, 40 volunteers, including MR DIY’s own team members and personnel from the Melaka River and Coastal Development Corporation (PPSPM), cleaned up and restored the natural beauty of the Sungai Melaka riverfront area.

Commenting on the clean-up initiative, MR DIY Group chairman Dato’ Azlam Shah Alias said the Malaysian brand has stepped up to lend its support to initiatives designed to preserve, protect and restore Malaysia’s scenic tourism spots.

“Tourism is a key industry for the country and as Malaysians start traveling again and borders start to reopen, we want to support the efforts to get our tourist industry back on its feet. This is one of the many ways we bring value to Malaysia and Malaysians,” he said.

Azlam thanked efforts of volunteers whom he said had worked tirelessly to ensure a successful programme.

“We have carried out several such initiatives, most recently with Majlis Perbandaran Hulu Selangor, where we cleaned up Sg. Kedondong and performed maintenance work on the facilities at the recreational area.  We hope to explore more partnerships like this in future,” he said.

The#DIY4Sungai initiative, one of several initiatives MR DIY has launched as part of its sustainability efforts, is designed to ensure that tourist areas adjacent to rivers and waterways are cleaned up, rehabilitated, and restored, ready to welcome tourists again. The homegrown retailer’s focus this time was the Sungai Melaka tourism hub, located in the heart of the historical city of Melaka, and the initiative provides some much-needed support to the country’s tourism industry.
