The Low Budget Cosplay Competition at AniManGaki Online 2021 recognized the best creative minds from cosplayers who showed their creative design ideas at the competition.
Contestants photographed their cosplay before and after dress-up and submitted entries in ‘4 slot picture frame’ with a short description of the cosplay.
Cosplay expert judges Vivid Vision, Rikka Blurhound and Shinku_真紅 faced tough decision to select the winners since everyone competing did well with all their creative minds in gear.
Freelancer Lee Chi Thong, 29, better known by her cosplay name LamborZinni, shows what an imagination she got and won the first prize in her first attempt at low-budget cosplay.
For props, she used apple, bananas and homemade bun breads to almost perfectly construct a Ragnarok-related cosplay as Adam from Japanese manga series Shuumatsu no Valkyrie (Record of Ragnarok Wiki).
Putting her creativity and skill to work, Lee wears a DIY costume covering her bare front with six pieces of bun breads to resemble a six-pack body and banana peels on head to look like blonde hair, and with her right hand holding the apple.
Total spent on the items was RM25.00
Her winning idea won her RM500 worth of goodies.
Lee has been a cosplayer since 2014. She loves arts and crafts and likes to learn new things.
Taking first runner-up spot was concept artist Yuan Wong, 30, with the epic Nina Tucker and her pet dog Alexander cosplay pairing.
Yuan Wong, who shares the cosplay name Team Manboobs with another cosplayer, said this was her first time participating in low budget cosplay.
“We thought of using as less props as possible, and then we remembered in Fullmetal Alchemist, some guy literally fused his dog and daughter together, thus the idea. So we use me and my dog, only two ingredients needed. And throw any of my sanity for good measure.
“Yes, this’s my first low-cost cosplay and it’s kinda fun,” she said.
She received RM300 worth of goodies as prize.
Yuan Wong loves doing cosplay to show off her handiwork and creativity, and enjoys making cocktails #YuanYumYeh.
Ellen Yong was declared third-place winner with her finger face mask cosplay that is Kaonashi or Faceless, a character from the film Spirited Away.
“I drew inspiration from a famous low-cost cosplayer Anucha ‘Cha’ Saengchart from Thailand. He used to create many epic and funny low-cost cosplays using his limbs. So I used his cosplay pictures as references.
“This was my first low budget cosplay contest and it was really interesting and fun.
“I used liquid paper pen, line weight pen, purple colour pencil to draw Kaonashi face on my finger and a small piece of black cloth to make his costume. The total amount that I had spent is less than RM10.00,” she said.
For her resourcefulness, the assistant architect at an architectural firm received RM200 worth of goodies.
Yong loves cosplaying and enjoys watching anime. In her spare time, she’s usually seen drawing, crafting, vlogging, cooking, singing, sewing, gardening and listening to music.
