Dinner raises RM1mil for primary school

A fund-raising dinner for a Chinese school in Petaling Jaya brought together politicians from both sides of the divide.

Over 1,000 people attended a fund-raising dinner for SJK (C) Yuk Chyun (育群華小) at its school hall in Taman Petaling Utama, PJS1 Petaling Jaya, recently.

Jointly organised by the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and the board of governors of Yuk Chyun primary school, the fund-raising dinner for the school reaped over RM1mil from the sale of tables for the dinner and public donations.

“We hit our target of raising RM1mil. We would like to thank all our donors for making this fund-raising dinner a successful one,” said a delighted Liew Choong Beng, chairman of the school board.

The public donated generously to the event. Among the biggest donors was Elegance Window Sdn Bhd who contributed RM160,000

The funds collected will go directly to purchasing items such as tables, chairs, lightings, blackboards and other amenities for the school’s new block of classrooms which is at the final phase of completion. The RM2.4mil cost of the new block was also raised through fund-raising projects.

PTA chairman Calence Loh said: “We thank the individuals, business community and the various Poh Toh Associations of Petaling Jaya and Puchong for their donations in cash and kind.

“The funds raised will be put to good use.”

Pupils from the school and a troupe from China entertained the guests with lively songs and colourful dances.

Among the VIPs who graced the dinner were Deputy Finance Minister Donald Lim Siang Chai, Selangor state senior exco member, Teresa Kok, Petaling Jaya Selatan MP Hee Loy Sian and MBPJ councillor Tang Fuie Koh.

The school which was founded in 1948 hopes to receive funding from the federal and state education budgets so that it does not always have to rely entirely on fund-raising projects.
