Tony Pua brightens SS2 morning market with Dragon escort

As the Chinese New Year, draws nearer, there are the usual hive of activities at the SS2 morning market as the makeshift stalls, setup specifically for pre-Chinese New Year sales, displayed all kinds of goodies required to usher in the Year of the Dragon.

And to bring a touch of the Chinese New Year festive atmosphere, the Member of Parliament for Petaling Jaya Utara Tony Pua, arrived on a Sunday morning bringing along the lion and dragon dances performed to the the noisy accompaniment of gongs and drums.

He walked through the rows of stalls extending out his hands to greet stallholders and shoppers who were happy to see their elected representative. Many were seen taking out their camera phones and taking snaphots of him.

Accompanying him on his rounds were Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) councillors Tiew Way Keng and Tony Cheong.

They attended a Street Calligraphy Contest event held next to the stalls.  The annual event was held in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year and is jointly organised by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), SS2 Selatan Residents Association and Beautiful Gate (an NGO for the disabled).

Councillor Tiew said: “This event is organized with twin objectives; firstly to promote Chinese culture and tradition so that the young generation will grow up not forgetting their cultural background and secondly to get the people understand and know more about MBPJ.

“We want to bring MBPJ closerto thepeople so that they will become aware that MBPJ being the local authority are for the people.”
