In conjunction with World Refugees Day, global apparel retailer Uniqlo has donated 21,200 pieces of clothing to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a UN refugee agency, to provide support and assistance to refugees in Malaysia.
The company demonstrated its commitment to social responsibility by way of clothing donation through its RE.UNIQLO program.
It said the donation of 21,200 pieces of clothing to UNHCR was a result of active participation and support of Uniqlo customers.
The donated clothing was distributed to refugees visiting the UNHCR office during a two-day event held at UNHCR.
The event aimed to provide clothing assistance to refugees in Malaysia, helping to improve their quality of life. Through this initiative, Uniqlo aspires to make a positive impact and foster a sense of community among the refugee community in Malaysia.
Uniqlo Malaysia sustainability director Evelyn Tan said they are proud to intensify their efforts in supporting refugees through their collaboration with UNHCR.
“The RE.UNIQLO program allows us to extend the lifespan of used clothing and create positive change within the communities we serve. Through this initiative, we hope to alleviate the burden on refugees while providing a sense of normalcy in their lives,” she said.
UNHCR associate communications officer Yante Ismail said, “We understand that refugee mothers and fathers face immense challenges in meeting their family’s basics needs. Often, they work tirelessly to cover rent and put food on the table, leaving very little for anything else. Receiving the gift of good quality clothes will go a long way to making a difference in their lives.”
He added, “Clothes not only mean a protective layer, but also restores a sense of dignity for people who have lost everything. UNHCR deeply appreciates UNIQLO’s longstanding commitment to improving the lives of refugees around the world, including in Malaysia.”
The RE.UNIQLO program is an initiative by Uniqlo aimed at maximizing the use of clothing and reducing waste. As part of this initiative, Uniqlo collects used garments from its customers and ensures they are properly recycled or donated to those in need.
