PORT DICKSON – Tesco Malaysia hypermarket organised a gotong royong activity jointly with Port Dickson Municipal Council (MPPD) in a beach clean-up at the town’s popular beach
Tesco Malaysia hypermarket organised a gotong royong activity jointly with Port Dickson Municipal Council (MPPD) in a beach clean-up at the town’s popular beach on Nov 30, 2013.
Tesco Malaysia director for government relations and corporate affairs Azlam Shah Alias and MPPD president Haji Ab. Khalid bin Mat led a troop of more than 500 volunteers in giving the 5.5 km beach a thorough spring-clean.
Volunteer groups from all walks of life particularly the Port Dickson community scoured the Port Dickson beach for trash that was worth the effort as tons of rubbish bags of litter and dumped items were collected at the end of the day.
Participants came from Tesco Malaysia and various government institutions and NGOs including Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism, Department of Environment, Jabatan Bomba and Penyelamat, Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM), Ikatan Relawan Rakyat Malaysia (RELA), Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK), Port Dickson Polytechnic, SWM Environment Sdn Bhd and SOLS 24/7 Malaysia.
“We take the environment seriously and making a positive difference in our community and the environment in which we operate.
“We are very pleased that we can make what matters better, together with the community here in Port Dickson,” said Azlam Shah Alias.
He said the beach clean-up activity was one of Tesco Malaysia’s priorities and responsibilities to protect the environment and it has set demanding targets to reduce carbon emissions in the fight against climate change.
“We are committed to meeting our 2020 targets to reduce 50% in carbon emissions in our direct operations, in the products we sell and to help our customers to do the same.
“Ultimately we aim to be a zero-carbon business by 2050,” said Aslam.
Other programs to reduce its carbon footprint were tree-planting, customers bringing their own reusable carrier bags and use of “Less CO2” distribution truck and energy-saving lighting, air-conditioning and refrigeration system at all Tesco stores in Malaysia.
