The 5th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) and the Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA) 2022 held a press conference on June 16 to announce the nomination list for the MGGA 2022.
There are over 100 films submitted for this year’s MGGA.
‘Drowning In Holy Water’ (Iran), ‘Full Time’ (France), ‘Hail, Driver!’ (Malaysia), ‘Memoryland’ (Germany, Vietnam), ‘No Ground Beneath The Feet’ (Bangladesh), ‘Rehana’ (Singapore, Bangladesh), ‘The Silent Forest’ (Taiwan), ‘Two Friends’ (India), ‘Whether the Weather is Fine’ (Philippines, Singapore), ‘White Building’ (France, Cambodia) were nominated as the Top 10 Films of 5th MGGA 2022.
The Indian film ‘Two Friends’ was nominated in five categories, and the two main casts of the film, Arif Shaikh (age 10) as Safikul and Asik Shaikh (age 9) as Palash, were jointly nominated for the Best Actor award, making them the youngest nominees for the Malaysia Golden Global Awards.
The jury members are Christine Hakim (Indonesian actress) as jury president, Lav Diaz (Filipino filmmaker), Sabrina Baracetti (president of Udine Far East Film Festival), Ho Wi Ding (Malaysian director based in Taiwan) and Chong Keat Aun (Malaysian director).
The festival also announced that Tourism Malaysia will be joining on board as the festival supporting partner.
MIFFest and Malaysia Golden Global Awards chairperson Joanne Goh said there will be two awardees for the Lifetime Achievement Awards at the awards ceremony this year – Kim Dong-Ho and Hou Hsiao-Hsien.
“Both of these best known figures have brought a lot of acclaimed work to the festival and the entire film industry. Kim Dong-Ho is one of the founders of the Busan International Film Festival and Gangneung International Film Festival, as well as the honorary president of our Malaysia International Film Festival,” she said.
The 5th MIFFest 2022 will be launched with the opening film ‘Edge of The World’, a film from the United States, telling the story of Captain James Brooke, which was filmed in Sarawak, Malaysia and supported by Sarawak Tourism Board. The director, Michael Haussman and the casts, Josie Ho, Bront Palarae and other casts of the film, will attend the opening ceremony and the festival.
The first MIFFest Project Market will kick start from July 12 -13 to discover potential feature film projects in Malaysia. The Top 5 official selections will be able to conduct meetings with local and international investors, producers and distributors.
Wu Ke-Xi (actress), Keoh Chee Ang (producer) and Vijay Munisamy (executive producer) are the judges for the Project Market.
The selected projects are ‘Don’t Assume Still Waters’ directed by Leysha Al-Yahya, ‘The Depths’ directed by David Yanez, ‘Sunny, Benny & Jenny’ directed by Jin Ong, ‘Garek’ directed by Cech Adrea, and ‘Maybe Today, If Not Today, Maybe Tomorrow’ directed by Hanloong Lim.
The 5th Malaysia International Film Festival 2022 will take place at Dadi Cinema, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur for six days from July 10 to 15, whereas, the 5th Malaysia Golden Global Awards 2022 will be held on 16 July at Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur, and will be broadcasted on Unifi TV (live broadcast in Malaysia), Viu TV HK (delay broadcast in Hong Kong), and MIFFest’s YouTube channel (live broadcast in worldwide).
